A Story
一 攤 二 伏 = one (攤手) dispersing hand, two (伏手) sensing hands
一 攤 二 伏 is a Wing Chun concept, referring to the number of times the 攤手 taan sau and 伏手 fok sau is practiced on each left and right side in the first form of 小念頭 siu nim tau.
In the 師公 Si-gong 梅逸 Moy Yat family of Wing Chun, we practice with one 攤手 taan sau and two 伏手 fok sau on each left and right side.
3.9.23 Day 4
There is a question within the community of how many times we practice 伏手 fok sau in the first part of 小念頭 siu nim tau. The answer, we must figure out for ourselves. Sifu: will let you think, can't just give answer, must think. Use Confucianism. Show you a square, give you three corners, if you can't describe the 4th corner, then we're not on the same page.
一 攤 二 伏, one taan, two fok means a total of 3 back-and-forth movements.. There is always 3 because of the concept of 三拜佛 (three prayer Buddha). In Buddhism, in meditation and prayer, one bows three times to Buddha and to ancestors.
So why 一 攤 二 伏 (one taan, two fok) and not 一 攤 三 伏 (one taan, three fok) instead?
I think of it, we're doing 護手 wu sau three times in total. 護手 wu sau, in it's vertical position in 小念頭 siu nim tau, is most like and symbolic to Buddhist prayer hands. When doing 一 攤 二 伏 one taan, two fok, we're doing a total of three 護手 wu sau hand movements which symbolizes the three bows in Buddhism, 三拜佛.
